Your head is not the place to cut corners. But that doesn't mean your helmet has to be a lump of anonymous polystyrene strapped to your skull. The past few years have seen a genuine step change in what a cycling helmet can actually do — integrated lights, turn signals, crash detection, Bluetooth connectivity — and the best of them manage to pull all of this off without looking like something out of a sci-fi B-movie.
Smart helmets broadly divide into two camps. There are the lighting-first helmets — Lumos being the standard-bearer here — which focus on making you genuinely, unmistakably visible on the road, with turn signals and brake lights built into a proper helmet shell. Then there are the audio-first helmets, like those from Sena, which bring rider-to-rider intercom, music and navigation to the fore. A handful are now beginning to combine both. The right choice depends on whether you're more worried about being seen or staying connected — or both.
Here's our edit of the best on the market right now.
1. Lumos Nyxel MIPS + Quin — Best Overall
From ~£170 | Buy from Amazon
Lumos bills the Nyxel as their lightest helmet yet, and having spent years making excellent but occasionally chunky smart lids, that matters. A strip of white LEDs runs across the front and wraps around to either side; the same treatment at the rear with red LEDs, and all electronics are IPX6 water-resistant. Visible up to 1,475 feet away in any weather, day or night, in three sizes and nine colour options.
The optional Quin crash detection module is the headline addition. It measures movement and force in three directions simultaneously, 1,000 times per second, automatically alerting an emergency contact if a crash is detected. In the US and Europe, Quin can also call the nearest ambulance directly. Crucially, the core crash detection and emergency alerts are free forever — no subscription required.
One detail worth noting: the Nyxel has been designed with a replaceable battery module, so when the battery eventually degrades you replace the module, not the whole helmet. A small thing, but the right thing.
One to flag before you buy: automatic brake lights require the full Lumos Remote rather than the Remote Lite that ships in the box.
Best for: urban commuters who want serious visibility tech and crash detection.
2. Unit 1 Aura MIPS — Best Alternative
~£200 | Buy direct
The Aura has earned a 5-star Virginia Tech safety rating and won both the Red Dot and iF Design Awards. It's NTA 8776 certified — the tougher Dutch standard for e-bikes — and ships with a magnetic brim, remote with automatic brake lights, and USB-C charging.
The IP67 waterproofing is notably better than most competitors — dust-tight and submersible — which matters in bad weather. The Fidlock buckle is a nice touch, easy to operate with gloves.
Best for: e-bike riders who want maximum safety certification.
3. LIVALL EVO21 — Best Value
~£100 | Buy from Amazon
A hundred pounds for a helmet with integrated lights, brake lights, turn signals and crash detection is strong value. It weighs just 350g and has IPX5 waterproofing.
Best for: commuters who want smart features without spending big.
4. Sena R2 EVO — Best for Audio & Group Riding
~£170 | Buy from Amazon
Sena focuses on communication. Mesh Intercom allows communication with multiple riders, while built-in speakers let you hear calls, GPS and music without earbuds.
Best for: group rides and staying connected.
5. Lumos Ultra E-Bike MIPS — Best for E-Bike Riders
~£180 | Buy from Amazon
Excellent visibility with powerful LEDs and full Lumos ecosystem integration. NTA 8776 certified and built for e-bike riders.
Best for: e-bike commuters who want maximum visibility.
6. LIVALL BH51M Neo — Best Lights + Audio Combo
~£120 | Buy from Amazon
Combines smart lighting with Bluetooth audio. A solid middle-ground option.
Best for: riders who want both features in one helmet.
7. Sena R1 EVO — Best Entry-Level Intercom
~£130 | Buy from Amazon
Affordable entry into Sena’s communication system with solid intercom features.
Best for: couples or first-time intercom users.
