Buying a bike online used to feel like a gamble. These days it's how most bikes get bought — but the difference between a great experience and a returns nightmare is entirely about who you buy from.

The French giant routinely embarrasses bikes twice the price. The Riverside hybrids, Triban road bikes and Btwin folders are the best money-to-bike ratio in Britain, delivery is quick, and the warranty is genuinely honoured. If someone asks me "what's the best cheap bike?", the answer almost always lives here.

Decathlon backs its own-brand bikes with a minimum two-year warranty, and the frame itself carries a lifetime guarantee — reassuring for a first e-bike or a kids' bike that's going to get thrown around. Returns on unused bikes are accepted up to 30 days for anyone, and up to a year if you sign up for their free membership, though you'll typically cover the return postage on something bike-sized. None of that changes my advice: if budget is the deciding factor, start here.

2. Tenways — best city e-bikes

E-bikes that look like bicycles: light, clean-lined, belt-driven, sensibly priced. The CGO600 Pro is one of the best-reviewed commuter e-bikes in Europe, and the whole range shares the same tidy engineering. Ships direct, arrives mostly assembled.

It's also one of the few online shops that will price-match a cheaper like-for-like listing elsewhere in the UK, and returns run to a generous 90 days on anything unused. Free delivery kicks in on orders over £50 — which covers every bike on the site — though if a bike arrives and the size is wrong, you'll contribute towards the return courier cost. It's the closest online buying gets to walking into a proper bike shop with every brand under one roof, which is exactly why it's my go-to when I'm not already sold on a specific bike.

4. Trek — best premium city bikes

Trek backs its frames for as long as you own the bike, and because there's a proper dealer network behind every sale, servicing and warranty claims go through a real shop rather than a call centre — register the bike after purchase and you're covered properly from day one.

5. Engwe — best budget folding e-bikes

Chunky tyres, big batteries, small prices. Engwe's folders aren't subtle, but they'll haul you up hills and into a car boot for less than half what the fashionable brands charge.

The current range spans featherweight commuter folders through to hill-flattening mid-drive models and rugged fat-tyre adventurers, most running sizeable batteries and torque sensors that make hills feel optional. Buying direct gets you Engwe's own warranty and UK returns handling. This is a brand that refreshes its line-up often, so treat any specific model as a moving target — check what's actually current on their site before you buy rather than assuming last year's bike is still the one on sale.

6. Himiway — best long-range e-bikes

Himiway's whole pitch is range — big batteries, fat tyres, bikes that measure rides in days. Not light, not subtle, but if your commute has hills or your weekends involve sand, there's a lot of bike for the money.

The trade-off is warranty small print worth actually reading: cover runs two years overall, but on parts like the frame, forks and brakes it narrows to a short window after delivery, so check anything you're worried about the moment the bike arrives rather than weeks later. If you do need to send a bike back, expect a flat return-shipping charge plus a restocking fee — not unusual for oversized items shipped by courier, but worth knowing before you order rather than after.

7. PVY — cheapest way into electric

Budget folding e-bikes from the same mould as Engwe. If you want to try electric without spending like it's a second car, this is the bottom rung that's still worth standing on.

Warranty runs to one year on the electrics and considerably longer on the frame, and returns are accepted within 14 working days provided the bike hasn't been used — sensible small print at this price point rather than anything to worry about. Stock held in the UK means delivery can land within a few days, which isn't a given with budget e-bike brands shipping from further afield.
