Which e-bikes are legal in the UK?
Legal e-bike checker · UK
In Great Britain an e-bike is legal to ride like a normal bike if it's an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC): pedals that work, a motor of no more than 250 W continuous rated power, and no motor help above 15.5 mph (25 km/h)1. The rider must be 14 or over1. Anything else is a moped or motorbike in law, and needs registering, taxing, insuring and a licence1.

Which e-bikes catch fire?
The London Fire Brigade's advice is to buy from a reputable seller, use the charger that came with the bike, and not charge it while you sleep or on an escape route6.
UK product recalls and safety reports are published by the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Every brand in the table above is searched there, and anything it finds is listed on the brand's page, word for word7.
Fire-related records for the brands on this page:
- Engwe T14, OPSS product safety report 2601-0174, 30 Jan 2026: the regulator recorded “serious risk of fire”. Non-compliant plug and missing conformity documents; consignment rejected at the border and destroyed45.
- Bluvall Folding electric bike (model Z01), as imported into the UK, OPSS product safety report 2510-0219, 10 Nov 2025: the regulator recorded “serious risk of fire”. OPSS found no evidence of sufficient battery protection or of UK conformity assessment, a speed above the legal maximum and a plug that didn't meet BS 1363; the import was rejected at the border and destroyed46.
- Freesky 540E (Ranger), as imported into the UK, OPSS product safety report 2609-0013, 4 Sept 2026: the regulator recorded “no evidence that the product has been assessed using relevant UK conformity assessment procedures”. The Declaration of Conformity supplied did not match the product, and OPSS noted that without evidence of conformity it may be possible for it to overheat and catch fire; the import was rejected at the border47.
- Velotric Tricycle (an e-trike, not one of the bikes above), OPSS product safety report 2509-0337, 21 Oct 2025: the regulator recorded “serious risk of fire”. The tricycle, battery and charger had not been through UK conformity assessment, with no technical documentation, missing labelling and a plug that didn't meet BS 1363; the import was rejected at the border48.
Other regulator records
Safety reports and recalls for the brands on this page that aren't about fire:
- ADO Air 20 Ultra (2025), Air 20 Ultra (2026), Air 20 Pro, Air 20S, OPSS product safety report 2605-0026, 28 May 2026: the regulator recorded “serious risk of injuries”. A sharp edge in the folding mechanism could wear through the wiring insulation; the import was rejected at the border and destroyed. The report names the Air 20 Ultra, Air 20 Pro, Air Carbon and Air 20S without a model year49.
- Brompton T Line (the non-electric titanium bike, made before 21 June 2024), OPSS product recall 2407-0119, 24 Dec 2024: the regulator recorded “risk of injuries”. The handlebar support and fork could become misaligned; the fix is retightening four steerer clamp bolts. It covers serial numbers up to 2406070001, not the Electric T Line50.
- Brompton Electric (previous generation, serial numbers below 2111030089), OPSS product recall 2203-0521, 5 Apr 2022: the regulator recorded “risk of injuries”. - Decathlon Van Rysel RCR PRO Ultegra and Dura Ace road bikes (non-electric), OPSS product recall 2508-0206, 15 Oct 2025: the regulator recorded “serious risk of injuries”. - Fiido T1 Pro, OPSS product recall 2409-0107, 15 Oct 2024: the regulator recorded “risk of electric shock”. A WN-07 travel adapter supplied with the T1 Pro Cargo did not meet UK plug standards; it was recalled from users, who were sent UK chargers55.
- Heybike EC Compact City, OPSS product safety report 2508-0073, 23 Dec 2025: the regulator recorded “high risk of injuries”. The hydraulic rear brake can leak fluid and stop working; the import was rejected at the border56.
- Orbea Orbea Optima e-bikes, model years 2019 and 2020, OPSS product recall 2607-0306, 11 Aug 2026: the regulator recorded “the welded joint in the middle of the frame may fail”. Questions people ask
Which e-bikes are street legal in the UK?
Ones that meet the EAPC rules: 250 W continuous, no motor help above 15.5 mph, working pedals, rider 14 or over1. The table above shows which brands sell UK-spec bikes that are listed at those figures.
Is a 500 W or 750 W e-bike legal in the UK?
Not as an e-bike. Above 250 W continuous it is a moped or motorcycle in law and needs registering, taxing, insurance and a licence1. The government decided in January 2025 not to raise the limit3.
Are e-bikes with a throttle legal in the UK?
A bike that can be propelled up to 15.5 mph without pedalling needs vehicle approval1. Many UK-spec bikes have a walk-assist or start-assist button instead.
What if the bike says it can be unlocked?
An unlocked bike that assists above 15.5 mph is no longer an EAPC1. The table marks brands whose own pages advertise this.

What this page is, and isn't
This page is an analysis of published documents: the law and official guidance from GOV.UK and the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles Regulations, and what each brand publishes about its own bikes. It is not legal advice, and it is not an opinion on any brand or bike. Everything was checked on 23 October 2026, and every fact links to its source.
✓ Legal as listed means the brand's own published specification for that market sits inside the legal limits. It does not mean I have tested the bike or seen its certificates, unless the page says so. ? Can't confirm means a figure the law depends on isn't published, so it can't be confirmed either way. Paperwork counts which documents are public. It is not a safety rating.
Laws change, and cities and councils can add their own rules. Before you ride, check the official source.
Corrections. If you make one of these bikes and something here is wrong, send the document to hello@velorution.com. I'll re-check it within five working days and update the page.
How this site earns. Some “Visit store” buttons are affiliate links. If you buy, Velorution may earn a commission at no cost to you. A brand can't buy a better mark. A store button only appears where a bike is marked ✓, and never on a model with a regulator safety record from the last three years.
