Which e-bikes are legal?
Legal e-bike checker
It depends where you ride. In the UK an e-bike must stay at or under 250 W and stop helping at 15.5 mph1. California allows up to 750 W and 28 mph on a Class 32. New South Wales allows 500 W until March 20293, and Queensland 250 W with an EN 15194 label4. The same model name can be legal in one place and a moped in another, so pick your area below.
I check e-bike brands against the law in each area, using only two things: what the government publishes, and what the brand publishes about its own bikes. Every mark links to the reason and the source.

Questions people ask
Which e-bikes are street legal?
It depends on the country and sometimes the city. In the UK, e-bikes up to 250 W that stop assisting at 15.5 mph1; in California, Class 1, 2 and 3 bikes up to 750 W2; in NSW, up to 500 W with assistance stopping at 25 km/h3. Your area's page lists the brands that meet its rules.
Which e-bikes are road legal in the UK?
Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles: working pedals, a motor of no more than 250 W continuous rated power, and no motor help above 15.5 mph, ridden by someone aged 14 or over1.
Which e-bikes are illegal?
Ones whose motor or speed is outside the local limits, ones with a throttle that works faster than the law allows, and, in places like Queensland and NSW, high-powered bikes that are only restricted by software3, 4.
Which e-bikes catch fire?
I only name a brand in a fire context when a regulator has published a record about it. Each area page lists those records for the brands checked, and each brand page quotes them in full. The London Fire Brigade's advice applies to every e-bike: buy from a reputable seller, use the charger it came with, and don't charge it while you sleep or on an escape route5.
An analysis of published documents, checked 23 October 2026: not legal advice, and not an opinion on any brand. How I checked, and every source.

What this page is, and isn't
This page is an analysis of published documents: the law and official guidance from each area’s government, and what each brand publishes about its own bikes. It is not legal advice, and it is not an opinion on any brand or bike. Everything was checked on 23 October 2026, and every fact links to its source.
✓ Legal as listed means the brand's own published specification for that market sits inside the legal limits. It does not mean I have tested the bike or seen its certificates, unless the page says so. ? Can't confirm means a figure the law depends on isn't published, so it can't be confirmed either way. Paperwork counts which documents are public. It is not a safety rating.
Laws change, and cities and councils can add their own rules. Before you ride, check the official source.
Corrections. If you make one of these bikes and something here is wrong, send the document to hello@velorution.com. I'll re-check it within five working days and update the page.
How this site earns. Some “Visit store” buttons are affiliate links. If you buy, Velorution may earn a commission at no cost to you. A brand can't buy a better mark. A store button only appears where a bike is marked ✓, and never on a model with a regulator safety record from the last three years.
